The Day Called St. Patrick's Day

Hooray!! The Day Called St. Patrick's Day finally arrived!! The first thing I know about the day called Saint Patrick's Day is that you MUST wear green. If you don't wear green, people can pinch you! I had that covered. Look how snazzy I looked in my festive attire!!

This is what I have learned about why we have this named day. Saint Patrick was a real man who lived a very, very long time ago. His name was not Saint. That part was added later. Patrick was born in Britain, but he was kidnapped or something and taken to Ireland to work. After a while, he escaped and went back to Britain. Later, he had a dream or a vision or something that told him to go back to Ireland. He went back to Ireland to be a missionary. He told the people who were pagans (they believed in lots of things other than God) all about God. He was able to help the people in Ireland become Christians because he told the rich and powerful people first. Then the rich and powerful people helped Christianity spread to the other people. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland. Legend says that Saint Patrick drove all of the snakes out of Ireland. (Not in a car...he just made them leave.) Actually, Ireland has never had snakes living there. This legend probably has something to do with those pagans, or "Druids", who used snakes as one of their symbols. Saint Patrick is believed to have died on March 17, which is why today was the day called Saint Patrick's Day.

There are lots of other things that have come to be associated with the day called Saint Patrick's Day. It has become a day to celebrate all things that are Irish. Shamrocks are popular symbols of the day. That is why my outfit was covered in them! My hairbow was even shaped like a shamrock!!

Leprechauns have also become a popular part of celebrations. Leprechauns are tiny little men who are always involved in some sort of shenanigans. Leprechauns can be nice or they can be mean. I prefer the nice ones. Like the one on Mom's box of Lucky Charms. He has marshmallows. :)

Pots of gold, rainbows, fun music, and girls who dance without moving their arms are also included in the celebrations. A popular phrase for the day is "Kiss Me, I'm Irish". I even have a shirt that says that! I never have any trouble getting people to do that. I'm very kissable. :)

Mom says that there are lots of other wonderful things about Ireland and Saint Patrick's Day. She said that she hopes that she will be able to take me to Ireland one day when I get older. She says that it is very beautiful there and that I would love it. She says that every year, when the day called Saint Patrick's Day comes around, she wishes that she could be in Dublin because it is so wonderful. Instead, she went to big work...

I had a wonderful day at Mrs. Leigh Ann's. I hung out at Grandmom and Granddad's after that while Mom got her hairs cut. I played with Colin. Brenna wasn't there because she is sick. I was sad that she missed the day called Saint Patrick's Day. I think she is feeling better now. Colin was telling me some confusing stuff about springs and something called "physics" because I was playing in my big toy. (I have a big toy at Grandmom and Granddad's house, too!) Colin is very smart. When I need to know stuff, I think I'll ask him.

Did you have a wonderful day called Saint Patrick's Day?? I hope so!!

Erin Go Bragh!! (That means "Ireland Forever!", Granny Kat.)
